Hi there, doodle parent. If you’ve ever said, “My dog is smart but wild,” you’re not alone. Doodles are clever, social, and full of personality. But without structure, they can quickly become overwhelming. Here’s what I share with my doodle training clients to help them create calm, happy homes.
5 Things To Do If You Have a Doodle
- Stick to a routine.
Feeding, walks, rest, and bedtime should happen around the same times each day. Doodles feel more relaxed when they know what to expect.
- Provide daily physical exercise.
Walks are great, but most doodles need more. Add games like fetch, agility, or leash drills to help burn off energy. A tired doodle is a well-behaved doodle. - Challenge their brain.
Mental stimulation matters just as much as physical activity. Use puzzle toys, teach new tricks, or hide treats to keep their mind engaged and focused. - Train with positive reinforcement.
Your doodle wants to work with you. Reward good behavior with treats, toys, or affection. This builds trust and motivates them to listen. - Start socializing early.
Expose your doodle to different people, dogs, and environments in calm, positive settings. The earlier you start, the better they’ll adapt as they grow.

5 Mistakes to Avoid
- Skipping training.
Doodles without structure often invent their own rules—and you probably won’t like them. Training gives them the guidance they need. - Neglecting grooming.
Their coats need regular brushing and trimming to prevent matting and skin issues. Grooming isn’t just about appearance—it’s essential for their health and comfort. - Letting bad habits continue.
Jumping, barking, or counter-surfing may seem funny at first, but they can quickly become problems. Set boundaries early and stick to them. - Keeping them busy nonstop.
Even active dogs need downtime. Create a quiet, cozy space where your doodle can rest and recharge. - Getting frustrated too quickly.
Your doodle is doing their best. What seems like “not listening” is often a sign of confusion, stress, or too much stimulation.
